Native to India, the tamarind tree produces long pods containing large seeds surrounded by a sticky sweet brown pulp which is a well known ingredient in Thai, Philippine and Indian recipes.  It was brought to Mexico where it is now hugely popular in Mexico in aguas frescas and dulces de tamarindo: tamarind drinks and candies.

Pelon Pelo Rico push up candy is made under the Lorena brand by the Hershey Company in Jalisco, Mexico and is one of the most popular ways to eat tamarind candy.

The treat's name loosely translates in English to "Yummy-Hair Baldie", because the candy is squeezed out of a tube through a grate, producing a Medusa-like effect.
