Molcajete mortar and pestle - natural Mexican volcanic stone

A classic stoneware molcajete hand-carved from volcanic rock.

Mexican mortar & pestles are particularly effective as their rough volcanic surface is perfect for grinding. This molcajete will also look great on display in your kitchen.

Used to grind spices and chiles, or to make the traditional guacamole or salsa

As these molcajetes are hand made, sizes can vary wildly.  Brush shown in photos is not always available.  Call on 08 8333 1931 for exact measurements if required and if brush is currently in stock.

As a guide, they are often around this size - Diameter aproximately 17cm (inside), 21cm (outside) and 15-20cm high. Aproximate weight is 6kg.

Please note: as this is a natural product, each will vary and have its own characteristics. Irregular surfaces, holes or bumps are all considered normal.

As this is a very heavy item, be aware it could add considerable shipping cost.

Preparing your molcajete prior to first use:
With the pestle, grind raw rice inside the bowl until the rice turns grey.
Empty and repeat until the rice no longer turns grey and then rinse with water and scrub with a brush.

Takes a bit of practice.

There is a technique to get this perfect, but once you have it you will wonder how you lived without it. After using rice to clean the molcajate, I soaked it in a bucket of clean water overnight, then after I final rinse off, I dried it in the oven on a high heat (220oC) for 30 mins. Once cooled, I used red wine to push the inside of the molcajate. A final dry for 30 mins on high in the oven, and it was ready to go. All the hard work paid off, onion, habanero chillis, some tinned tomatoes and I had my own chip salsa, that was greater than anything I could buy in a jar. My friends loved it, and we just used the molcajate as a bowl for the salsa while watching the footy, making it easy to refill when running low. Cleaning was simple, I recommend a pastry brush to get into its small holes, and drying it in the oven is highly effective. Just be careful, it's volcanic rock, so it holds the heat, I recommend leaving it in the oven for a few hours after you turn it off.
I definitely recommend buying a molcajate, and do not be afraid to experiment with it. Once the wine wears off, I intend to brush the inside with tequla.
