This ancient variety of corn was saved from extinction by Montana farmer, Dave Christensen. Originally widely cultivated by native Indians and early American settlers before monoculture crops nearly limited this delightful corn to the history books.
Painted Mountain is very cold hardy and can be ground for flour or dried for popping. Otherwise it can be grown purely to enjoy the rich tapestry of colours found in every cob.
This is a good variety to grow if you want to nixtamalize corn to make masa.
